UNITED AND LUMINOSITY 2020 ANNOUNCEMENT

As followers of Jesus, our mandate is to love one another. We want to go above and beyond to ensure the physical, spiritual, emotional and financial wellbeing of the New Wine family. It is with a very sad heart and in light of recent government announcements that we have decided, for the first time in our history, to cancel our summer events this year: United and Luminosity.

We recognise that many members of our family may feel particularly anxious in this turbulent and uncertain time and some will face an extremely difficult financial situation. As such, in this extraordinary circumstance, whatever our Terms & Conditions might say, we believe it is the right thing to do to offer full refunds (minus deposit) to all those who request them.

However, we have already had to outlay or commit to significant fees in preparation for this summer, which we will not be able to recoup at this late stage. In offering refunds, we are placing ourselves in your hands and under God’s provision. The decision to make refunds available could cost New Wine £1.06million and place not only future New Wine United events at risk, but the ongoing mission of New Wine – training, mentoring, planting and supporting local churches to change nations.

If you are able to donate all or part of your ticket fee to New Wine, we would be extremely grateful and if you are able to donate additional funds to cover those who aren’t in the same position, this would play a huge part in securing the future of New Wine and our mission. We will release more information early next week about how you can do this.

New Wine has always been more than an event. United is the banner under which we gather in the summer but our Kingdom work continues throughout the year through our network and the local churches committed to the New Wine DNA of Word and Spirit ministry. This remains unchanged and we are already seeing opportunities for churches to rise up in this time of uncertainty to restore hope and show the love of God.

These are challenging times for us all but we remain convinced that, as a family, our mission stays the same and we will continue to pray that God will move powerfully across this nation through the local church and his people.

A request from our HQ team:
In addition to this news, our staff team is also in the process of transitioning to work from home and therefore we will not be able to take calls at this time. We will be releasing more details next week which are likely to answer most of your queries but please refrain from contacting the office if at all possible. For anything urgent, email info@new-wine.org and please continue to pray for the team as we work hard to serve the New Wine family in this unprecedented time.

FAQ.

We know many of you have questions and we've tried to answer the most common ones here. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we deal with any outstanding queries.

We have taken this difficult decision for 2 main reasons:
1. It is morally and socially irresponsible to press ahead with an event that enables c.12,000 people to gather together in close contact for a week. This is our primary reason for the cancellation – to keep our delegates, volunteers and staff safe.
2. Our event is only allowed to take place legally if we can guarantee a specific level of medical provision. An amazing team of volunteer medical practitioners effectively run a ‘field hospital’ on site and treat c.800-1000 people, including some life-threatening incidents, at United. Without this provision in place we cannot hold our event (under health & safety legislation).
This year we will not be able to recruit the level of medical team we need because NHS workers will be required on the front-line for many months to come.
Even if the current guidance and restrictions surrounding the spread of Covid-19 are lifted in the coming weeks, there will not be time to confirm the infrastructure and support that is necessary to produce a gathering of this size safely. Thinking of our volunteer medics in particular, even if they were able to take leave in July/August, we would want them to rest and not work voluntarily for us. Plus, we are not prepared to place extra burden on the local healthcare services in Peterborough; they will have been working tirelessly to keep the most vulnerable in our communities safe and do not need an extra influx of 1000s of people potentially requiring their services.
No. Our event cancellation cover last year enabled us to refund all Friday and Saturday day ticket and half-week ticket holders when the storm led to an early event closure. However, no UK event insurer is offering the necessary extension cover for cancellation due to Covid-19. This places us in a difficult position. If all our family request the refunds we are offering for their United tickets, it will have a dramatic impact on our ongoing mission – training, mentoring, planting and supporting local churches to change nations. That is the reality and we want to be transparent with the New Wine family about this. In offering refunds for an event that we are contracted to pay significant advance fees and deposits for, regardless of the need to cancel it, we are placing ourselves in your hands and under God’s provision.
We are asking for donations to safeguard the future of New Wine. Many of our New Wine family don’t realise that the cost of building a small town on an agricultural showground for our United event is over £2million and is covered by the ticket fee income alone. We don’t make any surplus on the ticket fees in order to keep prices as low as possible for delegates.
As mentioned above, we have already expended significant costs on United 2020 production which we cannot recoup at this stage. We are fortunate enough to have some reserves to manage our cash-flow and keep operating for the immediate future, but the cost of cancelling United 2020 will be over £1 million, putting our future, and the possibility of any future summer events, at risk.
The non-refundable deposit per ticket is there to cover administration costs. In this case, it is there to safeguard our ability to be able to process the necessary refunds for you by ensuring we can pay our staff and keep our systems running in the short-term to do the refunds work.
We will be emailing all United delegates with full instructions. Please ensure that your New Wine record contains your current email address to best enable this. Instructions will detail the options available to you and one of these will be how to request your refund.
This process will take some weeks, so please do be patient with us. The process of refunding up to 12,526 tickets is not fully automated and requires manual authorisation for each booking. We understand that many delegates will desperately need their money returned in the current climate and we’re therefore diverting as much resource as we can and will prioritise this work, while keeping other core elements running. Our team are now working from home – accessing the system remotely – and some are now off sick with coronavirus, so we are facing some challenges, but we will refund you as quickly as we can. Thank you for your grace and patience in this.
No, not at all. Our T&Cs permit us not to offer refunds in this circumstance but we felt it was the right thing to do to offer them freely and willingly to all who need them, regardless of our T&Cs. If we do not make our full position clear to those in the New Wine family, then many will simply assume that we had insurance and/or a large reserve that will cover the refunds with minimal impact – that is not the case. We don’t want to be in the position of having to scale back our activity and then have people tell us that they wish they had known the full picture at the time so that they could have helped. We know that each person and family will be in a different position and we want to make sure all have the opportunity to do what is right for them, with our blessing.
We will shortly be emailing all United delegates with full instructions. Please ensure that your New Wine record contains your current email address to best enable this. Instructions will detail the options available to you and one of these will be how to donate all or part of your ticket fee.
Thank you so much for considering giving to New Wine at this time. Your donation will play a huge part in securing our future and supporting our mission.

Each event will need to make decisions that they judge are best for them and their delegates. We considered ‘holding over’ monies and honouring them for next year’s United event. However, after full consideration we felt that some delegates may appreciate making that choice for themselves and would prefer to have their refund in 2020 – perhaps when they need the money the most if their jobs are at risk.
We are at peace with the decision we’ve made and feel that it is morally and spiritually the right thing for us to do. We are also thankful and encouraged by the supportive and understanding response from our delegates. We have made a considered and prayerful decision together as a leadership and believe it is what God would have us do at this time.
We are hopeful, and excited even, at the opportunities God may give us in months and years ahead. We have always been clear that we are so much more than one annual summer event and we will now confidently step further into that reality. We can already see the kindness of God in some of the strategic work he has led us through in recent months which have prepared and better positioned us for strengthening and encouraging local churches through our network. If you are a church leader and not yet in the New Wine Leaders Network (LN) then join us for specific support and advice on leading your church through these difficult times. Contact a member of our regional team (via www.new-wine.org/network/contact) or encourage your church leader to do so in order to be well equipped to support and encourage you.
While our main event will not be going ahead, we are exploring possible alternatives for all those who still wish to gather locally this year on a smaller scale once social restrictions are lifted, if this becomes possible. Please keep an eye on our website and social media channels for all updates on this.
