Church Wigan is the name of a newly formed Anglican benefice serving 225,000 people in the Diocese of Liverpool. It covers over two thirds of Wigan Borough, the largest in Greater Manchester, and lies equidistant between Liverpool and Manchester.
Wigan is on the leading edge of the Diocese’s vision of a ‘Bigger Church to make a Bigger Difference’, addressing the evangelistic imperative of the Great Commission. We are:
• Grounding what it means to be a disciple of Jesus that makes other disciples, with simple expectations of behaviour such as the Bishop’s ‘Rule of Life.’
• Focusing on growing leaders, both lay and ordained, and planting congregations.
• Making radical structural changes to the CofE landscape by pushing forward with larger parishes and developing resource churches.
In 2015 Wigan Deanery received the first of the Church Commissioners’ Strategic Development Fund initiatives, known as 'Transforming Wigan', aimed at turning around the missional and financial strength of the deanery. Five years later, the Transforming Wigan movement has given birth to Church Wigan, a single benefice comprising 7 hub-parishes, with 2,400 members and over 50 resource buildings. Church Wigan is committed to a vision of seeing the life of the borough transformed and revived on every level through engaging at least one in ten people in Wigan on a discipleship journey with Jesus. We are refreshing existing worship communities and, vitally, planting many new ones (multiplication) in order to form disciples who make other disciples and bring God's love and justice to their neighbourhoods and networks.
For sure this is a challenging calling. Yet Wigan is an exciting place to have a go. The people here have a profound sense of identity and community, and while the media sometimes characterises Wigan as a deindustrialised ‘rugby league town’, it is in fact rich in many areas: the council and health authority are award-winning, and a number of its schools and colleges have a great national reputation. We are witnessing God do a new thing here in Wigan - it's a great place to be.
The postholder will be employed by Wigan Deanery Trust, a new charitable organisation created to resource Church Wigan - www.wigandeanerytrust.org. The post is funded - we are in the final stage of securing funding from the Church Commissioners' strategic development fund of which we will receive confirmation by June 26th. While we are very confident that we will secure this funding, of course we can not confirm it until it has been awarded.
