St John’s Church Colchester is the largest Anglican church in Colchester. We are part of the New Wine network, and we are entering a new season of adventure as we seek to share the Gospel to our community and beyond, with the hope and expectation that not only will we grow ourselves but that we will see many come back to faith, grow deeper in their faith and come to faith for the first time. We recognise that we have a responsibility to resource to serve Colchester beyond our parish boundary.
We are seeking a senior leader at a pivotal time in the life of St. Johns, to work alongside our new vicar and staff team to oversee and implement the necessary administration systems, to manage our buildings, finances, comms, Sunday rotas and to maximise our rental income from our Community Centre and to support the vicar in planning the church's diary and events.
This is a brand new role, and you will have the opportunity to help shape how this works out in practice. It is envisaged the role will have a 80/20 split between Operations Manager and Executive Assistant roles, but the ratio may change as is needed. The outline below is given as an indication of the type of role rather than a complete job description, as we recognise this is a wide ranging role.
There will be the opportunity to shape and review the admin, finance and caretaking team, and build the team necessary to ensure that SJC grows and flourishes in the months and years to come.
As a Senior leader, you will be a full member of St. John’s church, attending a Sunday service each week, as well as being part of a small group (community group). Your faith should be reflected in this role, as you seek to encourage not only your teams but play your part in the life of the church. Attendance at the New Wine Summer festival will be encouraged, and our intention is for paid staff to attend the New Wine Leaders conference.
A key tool that we are rolling out at St. Johns is Churchsuite. You will be expected to oversee the overall vision and implementation of the system with the staff and wider community. Your specific responsibility will be promoting the Community Centre and managing bookings for that alongside the church building.
In overseeing the day-to-day finances of the church, you will oversee our invoicing, billing, giving and budgeting system. We use Xero accounting software, and you will need to be familiar (or become familiar) with the software, and work alongside the finance team to report a monthly finance report for PCC. You will need to undertake necessary book keeping, reconciliation and oversight of church expenses as well as Gift Aid.
In overseeing the buildings, you will plan and oversee maintenance and repairs, planning and managing budgets and ensure that all legal and statutory obligations are met, such as health and safety plans and risk assessments. You will also need to ensure that the buildings are cleaned and heated appropriately.
We know how it is important that we communicate well, both with our church members and with the wider community. We would want you to help us to develop our vision for our website, comms, social media and wider publicity.
The Executive assistant part of the role recognises your specific support for the Vicar, in planning and delivering the vision for St. Johns.
If you are interested in applying for this role, please send in a CV with a covering letter outlining your motivation and particular skills for this role by Friday November 1st to Paul Dever at paul@stjohnscolchester.org.uk.
For an informal conversation please email Paul to arrange a suitable time
