Job Description for Children’s Minister Role at St Stephen’s Church, Southmead
Who are we?
St Stephen’s Southmead is a growing church with a big heart. We love Southmead and have been a part of the estate since it started. St Stephen’s is 94 years old.
We are a church that wants to grow faith in our community. We run a brilliant programme of weekday events, some to disciple and others to welcome our community in. We are about to embark on an adventure with Jesus Shaped People, a discipleship resource for the whole church.
We are a Priority Community which means that this is a low income area but one that is loved and given priority in the Diocese of Bristol hence our funding for this post.
We have so many opportunities to work with children and young people that we need someone to come in, build team, organise our efforts and serve the schools in any way possible. We work alongside Southmead Churches Together for Christmas and Easter in a Box and other events during the year.
Our Sunday services are intentionally intergenerational and we are learning and growing in this as much as we can. We need some help to make the services even better at discipling people of all ages. We don’t do Sunday school, we all worship together. We also run termly events like Pancake Party, Light party and Wednesday Fun during the Summer holidays. We are currently piloting a Tea Time Church during the week and Youth Alpha on a Sunday evening. We have about 20 children that might come on a Sunday, 15 different children on a Wednesday, 8 youth and so many toddlers and babies on a Monday.
We have a lot of fun. We pray. We serve. We love Jesus.
We would love someone that has a similar heart to us to come and join us to help us reach the younger people of Southmead.
We are looking for a Children’s Minister to work in the Church and Community.
We hope you will:
1. Get actively involved in helping lead and shape our Sunday intergenerational worship by advocating for and creatively involving the younger members of the congregation so we can meet with God together.
2. Develop and encourage family discipleship through the week.
3. To continue to develop our strong links with schools through Christmas in a Box, prayer spaces and other means in order to serve the schools’ needs and share the gospel.
4. To find ways of partnering with others in our community to both serve and share faith with our community.
5. Build and encourage a sustainable team.
Person Specification
We are looking for a person who:
1. Has a strong and life sustaining faith, with a prayerful attitude to work, an active Biblical faith and an openness to the Spirit. It is a genuine occupational requirement that this person be a practising Christian to fulfil this role.
2. Will play a full and active role in the worshipping life of St Stephen’s.
3. Can both work well with what we already have built up but also has creative ideas of their own.
4. Has experience of working with schools and understands their culture.
5. Will build team so that the discipleship lasts beyond your tenure.
6. Will equip and enable others to be confident leaders.
7. Is personable, respectful and understands the culture of estates.
8. Loves children and their families.
9. Wants to grow in their own faith and help children grow in fait
