Bringing Light into Darkness
John’s gospel reminds us that “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). The Ruby Project embraces this message by providing a safe place for women working in the sex industry and experiencing the darkness of trauma, abuse, and isolation. The project is a lifeline for women who have nowhere to turn. It offers practical support, counselling, and community for women critically at risk, helping them heal and rebuild their lives
Many of the women we serve have experienced unimaginable hardship. They may be fleeing violent homes, living on the streets, or suffering from deep emotional scars. Ruby offers respite, a place of peace and a loving community. Just as the angels announced the good news of Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, ordinary people on the margins of society, Ruby brings good news to those who are overlooked and forgotten.
At Christmas, we celebrate God’s greatest gift, Jesus, who came to bring hope to a broken world. The women at Ruby are in desperate need of hope, and through the project’s work, are offered the resources and support to rebuild their lives.
Church Army’s Ruby Project works with agencies to provide safe accommodation for women escaping dangerous situations. It provides practical support, such as assistance with housing, benefits, and legal advice. Our teams offer emotional and spiritual care through mentoring, and group activities, as well as life skills, empowering women to regain independence and self-sufficiency.
Just as Mary and Joseph found refuge in the stable, women at Ruby find refuge in a community that cares deeply for them. The love and compassion they receive are reflections of God’s love for each of us, especially for those who are suffering.
At all times, particularly at Christmas, we’re called to reflect the love and generosity of Christ. Jesus tells us, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). The women who turn to Ruby are among those who have been marginalized, hurt, and abandoned. But you can make a difference.
Your financial gift allows Ruby to continue offering essential services. A donation can provide shelter, counselling, and resources for a woman in need. Many women at the project have no one to give them a gift this Christmas, your generosity can ensure that each receives a package of essential items and a reminder that she is loved and valued. You can volunteer, and most importantly you can pray; for the women’s safety, healing, and that they would experience the hope and peace of Christ this Christmas.
Will you be an angel this Christmas by supporting the Ruby Project and offering hope to those who are critically at risk? Your generosity can make a profound difference in their lives, bringing light into their darkness and showing them the love of Christ.
