An increasingly common story

As we get closer to Christmas and the colder nights creep in, CAP are looking beyond the statistics. Offering free services through local churches, they’re’re committed to walk with people on every step of their journey out of poverty

The cost of living is continuing to rise across the UK. Whether it’s interest rates or the energy price caps, the numbers just aren’t moving in the right direction for so many. There’s a lot of jargon in the way of understanding why things are so difficult at the moment. All we can be sure of is that each pound is having to stretch a lot further each week – and it’s unbearable for so many. Worse still, how can families explain to children why certain things are out of reach? How can the inquisitive mind of a young child understand that the treats from last week simply aren’t affordable today? All they can do is watch and wonder why their friends and family are being affected in different ways.

Jesus Christ taught us that every life is precious, and it’s God’s will to see those lives thrive and build his kingdom. Although a uniquely beautiful time of year, Christmas is when the financial worries of the year can become especially clear. It’s easy to become lonely and isolated. Grace and the Grumblies is a powerful reminder that salvation and hope can be found in Jesus and connection with the local church, with a welcoming community and a loving family that is ready to help in any way they can.

The story might be fictional, but poverty is painfully real for so many in our communities. We hope this book will be a valuable resource to educate and support you in raising awareness of the effects of debt and poverty on children and families across the UK. Inspiring a generation that expresses empathy, courage and wisdom have true power to bring positive change and give a voice to those who need it.

When faced with questions of crippling hunger and unbearable cold, it’s difficult to explain the effects of an unrelenting cost of living crisis to children. How do you bring clarity without fear? We can find real comfort in scripture: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8

This Christmas time, as you string the lights, wrap presents for your loved ones and navigate your own way through these days, our prayer is that the peace and joy of Jesus would fill your homes and your conversations. We hope that as you turn the pages of Grace and the Grumblies, with Grace and her mother slaying dragons and fighting the grumblies, you would find strength and grace to equip our future generations to continue the fight against unmanageable debt and poverty.

CAP exists to see transformed lives, thriving churches and an end to UK poverty. Will you stand with us in our efforts to bring restoration, reconciliation and hope?
